The Star Sydney will close popular nightclub Marquee later this year, after a decade in business, as it seeks to rebuild trust with shareholders.
Recently appointed CEO Scott Wharton said there have been challenges operating the venue as a nightclub and that it’s time for the venue to take a new direction.
“Incidents and issues have surfaced at times and that creates additional pressures to meet the standards we expect of ourselves,” he said.
“It’s a tough call to make but if we’re going to earn back the trust and confidence of all our stakeholders, we need to assess and react accordingly on how we run our operations.”
Wharton said the business maintains a strong relationship with the owners of the Marquee brand and plans to work with them on other opportunities in the future.
“They are an excellent partner, and we will discuss doing more with them in the premium hospitality space,” he said.
“In this instance, it’s about looking at other food and beverage options that will further enhance The Star Sydney as a world-class tourism and entertainment destination.”
Wharton said the redeployment of any impacted staff will be a top priority.
