Accor is celebrating 30 years since its first hotel in the Pacific region opened its doors to guests, with the company marking the milestone by declaring it will open 30 new hotels in the next few years.
The French company has chalked up its momentous anniversary, with its local story beginning with the opening of Novotel Sydney Darling Harbour in 1991.
In its three decades in the Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific region, the company has seen three esteemed leaders in charge, beginning with David Baffsky AO, who served the company as its Executive Chairman from 1993 to 2008.
Also during this time, Michael Issenberg held the role of Chairman and Chief Operating Officer from 1994 to 2006 before being succeeded by Simon McGrath AM, who has served as Chief Executive Officer since 2006.
Now with a presence numbering more than 400 hotels across 18 brands covering the length and breadth of Australia, New Zealand and a strong collection in Fiji and French Polynesia, Accor is looking to its next 30 years and beyond, with a strong pipeline of properties still to come.
By 2023, Accor will launch a variety of new brands into this market, with debuts scheduled for Mondrian Gold Coast, 25hours Hotels in Sydney and Melbourne, SO/ Melbourne and Fairmont in Port Douglas. The company has recently welcomed its Mövenpick brand to Australia with properties now open in Hobart and a second to come in Melbourne from next month.
New properties slated to open soon include Sofitel Adelaide, Mercure Melbourne Doncaster, The Porter House Hotel, MGallery by Sofitel in Sydney, The Sebel Wellington Lower Hutt in New Zealand and an as-yet-unnamed property on Pitt Street in the Sydney CBD also opening in early 2022.
“As we celebrate 30 years in the Pacific, I would like to thank our incredible teams for their heartfelt service, our loyal guests for their custom and the support of our partners,” said Accor Pacific Chief Executive Officer, Simon McGrath.
“Now, as we look forward to the tremendous opportunities ahead of us, we have a very strong and exciting future. We will continue to support our talents, our local communities, our guests and our partners to forge many more successful and meaningful decades.”
