The much anticipated maiden opening of Hotel Indigo in Australia has taken place, with the first guests experiencing their first taste of the Adelaide neighbourhood this week.
Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets marks the debut of the IHG Hotels and Resorts brand in Australia, with the location becoming the first of four currently confirmed to open in Australasia. Coming years will see the brand open doors in Melbourne, Auckland, Brisbane and Sydney.
“Hotel Indigo has paved its way across the globe as a truly fascinating brand designed to draw inspiration and spark curiosity from the roots of its surrounding neighbourhoods,” said Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets General Manager, Thomas Zinn.
“With our ideal location right next door to the iconic Adelaide Central Market and near the newly renovated Her Majesty’s Theatre, Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets is the perfect escape for visitors and locals looking for a new way to connect with Adelaide.” Additional local highlights include the city’s Chinatown district and the cultural and culinary melting pot of Grote and Gouger Streets. Rundle Mall, the Adelaide Zoo, Adelaide Oval, Botanic Gardens and art galleries are also a short walk away.
As the name suggests, the hotel is located close to the Adelaide Central Market which showcases local producers and growers. Produce from local suppliers is on hand for guests at the hotel via its two restaurants – the ground floor Market & Meander Eatery and raw food bar, Merrymaker on the 16th floor. The two restaurants are being overseen by Italian chef, Gabriele Pezzimenti, who plied his trade at high-profile restaurants in the USA, Spain and Dubai before relocating to Adelaide.
The works of acclaimed Australian collage artist, Tristan Kerr, are on display at the hotel, along with numerous contemporary reflections to the neighbourhood etched on an exposed terracotta brick feature wall with ‘Six o’clock Swill’ and ‘Mad March’ which references the annual festival season in the city.
Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets features 145 rooms and suites with decorations inspired by local neighbourhood cues. These include copper fixtures in line with South Australia’s copper mining heritage, light wood furnishings and rugs depicting the tessellated tile pattern often used in traditional Adelaide homes. Bathrooms have modern two-head rainfall showers and Biology bath amenities, supporting the hotel’s green ethos with large-format bottles and environmentally friendly packaging.
Among this room count are 25 suites, each offering king beds, espresso machines and minibars with locally sourced items including pre-batched Negroni from the Adelaide Hills and products from Adelaide’s Melba Chocolates. Eighteen of these suites feature private balconies.
Guests can also access a fitness centre and 13-metre outdoor infinity swimming pool, with meeting facilities including two boardrooms and event space on the mezzanine and rooftop levels.
