Perth's Waterfront redevelopment
Perth's Waterfront redevelopment

The Accommodation Association of Australia (AAA) says fresh opposition to the Western Australian Government’s $440 million redevelopment of the waterfront in Perth is “short sighted”, with the visionary plan being called an essential factor in the future of tourism in the state.

“It is extremely disappointing to see opposition to the Perth waterfront,” says AAA CEO, Richard Munro.

“Consistent with our submission to the WA Government on this issue in May last year, the Accommodation Association is fully supportive of the Government’s plans to redevelop Perth’s foreshore,” he says.

Munro says if a project of this magnitude did not get off the ground, there would be a dire impact on tourism.

“If there is continued opposition and if the plans are not realised, Perth’s reputation as an international tourism destination will be at risk,” he says.

“The accommodation industry in Perth’s CBD and its immediate surrounds has experienced high demand and strong growth in the past decade.

“This has seen major hotels and serviced apartments in Perth’s CBD and immediate surrounds record high occupancy levels.

“There is a clear need for new accommodation infrastructure in Perth and in particular, as part of the Perth waterfront.

“If what is proposed in the Government’s waterfront plans becomes a reality, the Perth waterfront will be a magnet for both domestic and overseas visitors.

“The Accommodation Association has, and will continue to engage with the State Government to help ensure the exciting development comes to fruition,” Munro says.
