Ambient music, karaoke, DJ performances and live music licensing for hotels, motels and the wider hospitality industry has been simplified following the merger of music licence transactions of Australia’s two rights management bodies.
Two years of consultation with the accommodation industry has been put into the tie-up, which has resulted in the creation of OneMusic Australia. The new label comprises the Australasian Performing Rights Association and Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society (APRA AMCOS) and the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA).
Under the new OneMusic Australia label, businesses can manage their music licensing in one place rather than dealing with two organisations depending on how they provide music to guests and visitors.
Under the new structure, a new ‘User Pays’ system has been developed for hotels to pick and choose the licence requirements needed for their respective businesses. For example, music for a hotel lobby can be managed separately to music for a restaurant or bar, the latter earning a discount under this particular plan.
An All-Inclusive option is also available for venues needing a variety of music types, including live performances, function and event spaces and digital delivery of music such as in-room streaming systems.
APRA AMCOS Chief Executive, Dean Ormston, said the new system would significantly reduce the administration burden for hospitality businesses.
“This is an important initiative which allows us to continue our work in supporting innovation and creativity for the Australian music industry,” added PPCA Chief Executive Officer, Dan Rosen.
