TFE Hotels yesterday reopened an icon of Melbourne as the curtains were pulled back on the new-look The Savoy Hotel on Little Collins following a three-month renovation.
Designed by Woods Bagot, the 163 rooms and public spaces reveal a modernised template which pays tribute to the building’s art deco history as the original Hotel Alexander, built in 1928. Each room has been refurbished and now feature a dove grey, blue, white and charcoal colour scheme. Custom-designed carpets and full-length mirrors have also been installed.
Bathrooms have also been refreshed with white subway-style tiles and chequerboard floors and chrome tapware that reflect the building’s timeline to date. Melbourne’s new Savoy hotel will be sold under the TFE Hotels Collection of historic and charmed heritage architecture – the building once advertised as the first hotel in Australia to have ensuite bathrooms.
TFE Hotels Chairman Allan Vidor said the new design would elevate the Savoy to one of Melbourne’s most sought-after accommodation experiences.
“This hotel has such a wonderful story, in its history, and in its place in the Melbourne psyche – which makes it a perfect fit for the TFE Hotels Collection brand.
“This is the most exciting unveil of the year. This magnificent hotel will reclaim its position as a grand hotel of Melbourne, as it was when it opened in 1928.”
Lobby upgrades have included smoked mirrors and brass, backed by soft furnishings and custom rugs. Meeting facilities have been recoloured with a timber, leather and stone look, while the Level Two restaurant has seen new chandeliers fitted and interiors to reflect a 10-storey atrium.
