The Langham has teased a new hotel opening in Southeast Asia – its second in the region following the opening of The Langham Jakarta last year.
Speaking at a media event in The Langham Sydney on Thursday afternoon, The Langham Melbourne MD and Regional Vice President, Operations – Pacific and Southeast Asia, Jeffrey van Vorsselen, said details of the hotel will be revealed in the coming weeks.
“In the near future, we’ll be making an announcement – that we are really excited about – about a new hotel development in Southeast Asia,” he said.
It’s the latest in a series of major openings for the group, following the debut of The Langham Gold Coast in June and the introduction of The Langham Jakarta.
Speaking of the Gold Coast hotel, van Vorsselen described it as the ultimate beachfront location.
“You can literally walk out of the hotel straight onto the sand onto the beach,” he said.
“It’s a stunning hotel. It’s been very well supported by the community, and we think it’s a great addition to the Australian luxury hotel market.”
The Langham Jakarta, which opened in mid-2021, has become a recognised luxury destination in the region, according to van Vorsselen, helped by its popular restaurant, Tom’s – a partnership with British Michelin-starred chef Tom Aikens.
“It’s truly a luxury hotel,” he said.
“It’s in District 8, which is famous for having eight large towers, and it’s now the destination in Jakarta. Tom’s is now one of the hardest restaurants to get into in the city.”
Van Vorsselen also pointed to the recent developments at Cordia Auckland which debuted its Pinnacle tower in October 2021.
“This is a property that we actually have a long history with,” he explained.
“We purchased the hotel back in 1997. We rebranded it few years ago from Langham to Cordis, and we’ve just spent NZS$175 million building a beautiful new tower – the Pinnacle tower – where we’ve added over 200 more rooms.
“Now we have a beautiful club lounge, wonderful suites, and also beautiful harbour views – you can see the Harbour Bridge and the surrounding Mount Eden – it’s a spectacular property.”
In the northern hemisphere, The Langham is developing a hotel on Murano Island in Venice at a unique heritage site.
“We’ve purchased an old, 15th century glassblowing building and we are now lovingly working on the design so that we can turn this into a luxury hotel,” van Vorsselen said.
