Ongoing lockdowns in Greater Sydney, various parts of regional New South Wales and other Australian states has forced Vivid 2021 to be cancelled for the second consecutive year, the NSW Government has confirmed.
The world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas was originally scheduled for its three-week run in August before being pushed back to late September due to the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent restrictions.
While vaccination rates have climbed significantly, the lack of downward progress on case numbers forced the state’s hand, with the reason given being a desire to protect event attendees, partners, artists, sponsors and suppliers.
NSW Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney, Stuart Ayres, said it was incredibly disappointing that Vivid had to be cancelled but that it was the right decision to minimise risk, cancel early and give certainty to all stakeholders.
“As we work together to contain the current outbreak and get our community vaccinated, we can all look forward to the return of major events like Vivid Sydney that bring us together in celebration,” said Minister Ayres.
“Vivid Sydney 2022 will shine brighter than ever – our artists and creative industries are so eager to put on a show and we can’t wait to see the Harbour City shining brightly again.”
Expressions of interest for installations, events and performances will open this week.
