Ovolo Hotels will open its second of three locations in Melbourne, releasing new imagery taking viewers inside how the new hotel will look from 8 April 2021, when guests begin to arrive.
Heavily themed in line with the rock and roll music of Ovolo founder, Girish Jhunjhnuwala, the highly progressive and quirky Ovolo South Yarra describes itself as a place where retro chic and pop art collide.
“Ovolo South Yarra will set the scene for an extraordinary hotel experience embodying Ovolo’s philosophy of connecting with its customers emotionally and will complement the local cultural scene through its art, design and unique restaurant concept,” Jhunjhnuwala said.
Art collaborations from labels including Mr Brainwash, Punk Me Tender and Ben Tankard feature throughout the property, juxtaposed with monolithic installations and a hybrid mixture of chrome and colour.
On entry, guests will be greeted by an enormous six-tonne concrete reception desk, backed by a vast lightwell reflecting retro 1980s video games which can be seen throughout the lobby and from room hallways. The 123 rooms throughout the property range from micro rooms to Rockstar Suites named after some of the biggest names of the era, with the designs in each inspired by disco, heavy rock and retro glamour.
The hotel has been interior designed by Luchetti Krelle, the same designer that envisaged the award-winning Za Za Ta Restaurant and Bar at Ovolo The Valley in Brisbane. Lead designer, Rachel Luchetti, said the hotel reflects a “heady mix of ‘mod’ and retro futurism”.
“Retrofuturism explores the themes of tension between past and future and the nostalgia of those eras is appropriated with integrated modern art installations and collaborations with local and international artists,” Luchetti said.
The hotel announced vegetarian restaurant Lona Misa would become the cornerstone of its dining offering, led by vegan author Shannon Martinez and innovative chef, Ian Curley.
