Crowne Plaza will add a second property in Melbourne early next year, with parent company InterContinental Hotels Group announcing it has signed a management agreement for the property on the city’s fringe.
The 107-room hotel is currently operating as Rydges on Swanston and has now been purchased by Carlton Property Group – the entity owned by Ross Pelligra, who also owns three Holiday Inn branded hotels – one at Melbourne Airport and two future sites in Werribee and Richmond.
Prior to debuting as Crowne Plaza Melbourne Carlton, the hotel will undergo an exterior refresh as well as a full internal refurbishment. Once open under its new moniker, the hotel will feature a new all-day restaurant and bar, fitness centre as well as a rooftop swimming pool and bar. Meeting and event facilities will consist of nine individual and flexible spaces measuring a total of 652 square metres, including a 300-seat space in theatre style.
IHG Vice President, Development – Australasia, Japan & Pacific, Abhijay Sandilya, said the company was thrilled to sign its latest agreement with Ross Pelligra.
“This is a true story of partnership, and we are so excited to grow together to bring amazing hotels to the Australian market,” he said.
“Crowne Plaza Melbourne Carlton will make a perfect addition to the Melbourne accommodation landscape, and a great second Crowne Plaza for Melbourne.”
Speaking on his newest acquisition, Pelligra said he was absolutely confident in the long-term future of Melbourne which was a key reason for his move to bring another Crowne Plaza to the city.
“Given our expertise in construction and ongoing commitment to build or reposition assets in partnership with IHG, we plan to lift the game and give this property a full refurb and a fresh start as Crowne Plaza Melbourne Carlton in early 2021.
“As travellers flock back to Melbourne, I know that this hotel with its winning location and exceptional rooftop pool bar and event facilities will be the place they choose to stay.”
