Accommodation providers across Queensland will breathe a sigh of relief after the state confirmed it will reopen its borders as part of a phased relaxation of restrictions beginning from Friday, July 3.
From this week, restrictions on public gatherings will ease, while visits by travellers from other states will be allowed from the following week, Friday 10 July. For the time being, however, all travellers from Victoria – including Queenslanders who have been in Victoria – will continue to be prevented from entering Queensland unless they undertake a two-week hotel quarantine stay at their own expense.
The move has been welcomed by the Accommodation Association, with CEO Dean Long saying the decision will bring big smiles to the faces of Queensland hospitality and accommodation providers.
“While leisure travel is just a small part of revenue and on-going government support is critical to help the sector through the ongoing restrictions, this is a very welcome announcement,” Long said.
“For the many locals who work in the accommodation sector, the prospect of being able to welcome guests once again as restrictions on travel and gatherings ease is great news.
“The accommodation sector has adjusted quickly from the get-go to implement all the recommended health measures. The systems, cleaning protocols and necessary measures are all in place and we’re ready to open for business,” he added.
Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk said the state was committed to opening borders in a responsible way.
“We have come such a long way together, but now is not the time to become complacent. We must all keep up the efforts to protect ourselves, our families and our community,” the Premier said.
