Melbourne’s rapidly growing CBD south precinct will welcome the city’s second Ovolo hotel from 2020, with the energetic hotel brand today selected by developers to manage a new $50 million mixed-use designer hotel to be built in the area.
Located around an even distance between the Yarra River through the CBD, Albert Park and Port Phillip Bay to the city’s south, the new Ovolo South Melbourne will feature 100 rooms in the brand’s customary ‘uber-trendy chic’ style. It will become Ovolo’s second hotel in Victoria alongside the existing Ovolo Laneways on Little Bourke Street.
New for Ovolo in today’s announcement however is that its new South Melbourne development will be the company’s first property on which it holds only management rights. Its ten other hotels in Australia and Hong Kong are all fully owned by the company in addition to being managed under its own brand.
In addition to the Ovolo hotel, the new project will feature a number of food and beverage outlets as well as residential, retail, function and recreation spaces.
Perri Projects Managing Director, David Scalzo, said Ovolo’s track record with design-led and lifestyle-driven hotel concepts made it a natural fit for the new South Melbourne development.
“Ovolo is well established and revered, yet agile and bold enough to challenge convention and break the mould on new sites, ensuring that each design complements and enhances the location of their hotels.”
Ovolo Group Founder and CEO, Girish Jhunjhnuwala, said the new development marked a new phase of growth for the company, labelling it a “natural evolution”.
“While we each bring our respective expertise in property development and hospitality management to this project, this partnership was forged through our mutual affinity for delivering truly unique projects and a shared vision for the South Melbourne site.”
Developers Perri Projects have received planning approval for the newbuild project. Construction on the new six-storey Ovolo hotel will begin in the second half of 2019 and is due to open to guests the following year.
