Developer Keith Johnson’s vision for a luxury waterfront development, gracing the pristine shores of Lake Macquarie north of Sydney first emerged in 1999.
Now, 16 years later Johnson Property Group has been given the approval it needs to turn that dream into a reality.
Last week (Jun 17), the Hunter and Central Coast Joint Regional Planning Panel gave the green light to the AUD$8 million first stage of the $388 million Trinity Point Marina after it was recommended for approval by Lake Macquarie City Council.
The approval means that the marina’s first 94 berths, along with a building, carpark and landscaping can now be built at the site.
The next stage, which HM understands is expected to submitted to council before the end of 2015, will see 250 luxury tourist and residential apartments, a luxury hotel, restaurant, function centre, day spa and infinity pool built at the site.
“It’s fantastic. It’s good not only for Johnson Property Group, it’s good for Lake Macquarie and it’s good that everyone can move on,” Johnson said.
While getting to this stage has at times been an uphill battle, Johnson said he never considered giving up on the project.
“When you believe in something, and you’re passionate about something, and you believe it’s the best for the site, the best for Lake Macquarie, the best for the community, you never think of giving up,” he said.
Johnson first envisaged building a world class, luxurious, yet environmentally sustainable marina after having lengthy discussions with Lake Macquarie City Council, and then former Mayor Greg Piper back in 1999.
“Council made it clear that they wanted a true tourist destination and an employment hub, not just a new residential estate at the site, and after five years of heavy discussions we made the decision to build the marina and the dream of Trinity Point was born,” Johnson said.
“The community has known for years that we were working hard to make this dream a reality. These plans were in place before we sold a single block of land, so the approval to build the first stage of the marina is very, very exciting.”
Johnson Property Group will now get a construction certificate, with work anticipated to start later this year.
Once complete, Trinity Point will boast a 188 berth marina, which will be one of the most environmentally friendly facilities of its kind in Australia. It will be complimented by a foreshore boardwalk that has 280 degree views of the lake and will open up the lakefront for all residents, tourists, guests and the community to enjoy.
“It’s all go from here,” Johnson said.
