IHG has provided over 10 tonnes of essential supplies to the Cyclone Evan-affected communities surrounding the company’s Fijian property, InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa.
In the past, IHG’s charity, ‘Shelter in a Storm’, has provided disaster relief in aid of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami, Christchurch’s earthquakes, the flooding in Bangkok, the 2012 floods in Fiji and now Cyclone Evan.
InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa General Manager, Scott Williams, said providing assistance in times of disaster “aligns with the role of hotels in our communities”.
“We have a responsibility to our people to provide relief – a refuge for people in times of need,” he said.
“By providing relief we can have a positive effect on the stability and safety of our communities.”
Village communities who received relief packages this week (Feb 25) include Naidiri, Malomalo, Sanasana, Nalele, Navisabasaba, Vusama, Batiri and Togobula. By the end of this week these villages and over 430 households have collectively received over 10,000kg of food and essential supplies from the resort.
“We are the ‘people’s resort’ because caring for the people of Fiji is at the core of how we do business,” Williams said.. “We are committed to our community in Fiji through good times and bad, and are pleased to provide relief to those affected by Cyclone Evan.”
Recognizing the opportunity to use their network of resorts and hotels across the world for good, IHG set up the Shelter Fund and established a partnership with CARE International to provide relief to communities following natural and manmade disasters.
The program fundraises in anticipation of disasters; enabling teams across the world to take immediate and effective action to help communities in crisis.
