In an exciting collaboration between Australian Poetry Limited and The Sebel Pier One Sydney, a Poets Corner will be installed in the hotel lobby during National Poetry Week from 5-11 September.
National Poetry Week will launch at The Sebel Pier One Sydney and is a celebration of poetry activities taking place throughout Australia. Poets are encouraged to host, create and deliver events and initiatives throughout the week.
The Poets Corner is an opportunity for poets and hotel guests to write, read and appreciate poetry while taking in Sydney’s glistening Harbour views. A public space in the hotel lobby will be transformed into a cosy Poets Corner, complete with writer’s chair, side tables and lamp, supplied by Cafe Culture, and a collection of new and old poetry books will fill the space and be available for sale.
The Poets Corner project was born following the success of Poems on Pillows – an initiative between Australian Poetry and the Sydney Writers’ Festival where poets were invited to submit poems for the chance to have them placed on pillows in all guestrooms at The Sebel Pier One Sydney.
Michael Sheridan, General Manager of The Sebel Pier One Sydney said: “The feedback from guests was wonderful. The Poems on Pillows place cards were certainly a talking point during the Writers’ Festival and a lovely memento for guests to take home with them.”
The seven winning poets will now have their poems printed on pillow-cases in celebration of the debut of the Poets Corner and the pillow-cases will be available for sale during National Poetry Week.
Paul Kooperman, National Director of Australian Poetry Limited said: “This is an exciting step forward for culture connecting with community in Australia. We are thrilled to collaborate with The Sebel Pier One Sydney and look forward to a terrific long term partnership for mutual benefit.”
The Sebel Pier One Sydney is also offering a hotel discount to Australian Poetry members during National Poetry Week.
The public are invited to come and enjoy the Poets Corner during National Poetry Week and take in the beauty of The Sebel Pier One Sydney. A schedule of poetry readings at the Poets Corner will soon follow as part of National Poetry Week.
The Poets Corner will be launched at The Sebel Pier One Sydney, Friday 2nd September, 10.30am by Sally Seltmann, prominent singer-songwriter and poet.
